West Indies captain Darren Sammy insisted his side always believed they could beat Pakistan despite the recent off-field struggles.
The build up to the first Test was dogged by public rows between senior players, while the likes of Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo were omitted from the squad.
However, Sammy's side pulled together as they recorded their first Test win in more than two years with the 40-run success in Guyana.
Sammy: Pleased with the way his side pulled together
And Sammy, who took five wickets in the second innings, said: "This is what West Indies cricket is about.
"We as a team needed this performance. Lately, things hadn't been going well but I had the belief, this team had the belief."
Ravi Rampaul justified his selection as he took seven wickets in the match, having previously only claimed four victims in his previous five Tests.
Disappointing
And Sammy was pleased for the fast bowler, saying: "Rampaul looks fit, and has worked really hard with Ottis Gibson. It was a tough decision to pick between him and Fidel Edwards."
For Pakistan, captain Misbah-ul-Haq was left to rue what could have been as his side slumped from 80-3 to 178 all out chasing 219 for victory.
"To lose this Test is disappointing, they played better cricket and bowled disciplined lines," said Misbah.
"We dropped so many catches and gave away so many runs to the lower order. We were a little disappointing from the batting point of view also.
"We fought well yesterday [Saturday] to recover after losing early wickets, but most of our guys got out to good balls."
