Cheema to undergo fitness test today

KARACHI: Aizaz Cheema, the uncapped fast-bowler who was selected for the limited-over series against West Indies on Wednesday, will have to pass a comprehensive fitness test to retain his place in the touring party.

Well-placed sources told ‘The News’ that the Sargodha-born pacer is still dogged by a thigh injury and could be ruled out of the tour of the Caribbean if he failed to pass the fitness test which will be conducted on Thursday (today).

Cheema, 31, managed to win a place in the national team with his impressive performance in domestic cricket.

However, a few weeks back he suffered from a thigh injury and there are fears that the pacer might not have fully recovered from it.

If Cheema failed to pass the fitness test, then Pakistan are expected to pick rookie pacer Sadaf Hussain, who has been picked as one of the reserves.

“Most of the selectors were impressed by the talent of Sadaf and could opt for him if Cheema is unable to prove his fitness,” said a source.

Sadaf is an effective left-arm pacer who has had a successful first-class season. Also in contention for a place in the squad is Sohail Khan, the Karachi-based fast-bowler.
